The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET, which is a Test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ as well as ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in Indian Universities and Colleges.The UGC-NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode w.e.f. December 2018 onwards.
Awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and Paper-II of UGC-NET. The candidates qualifying only for Assistant Professorship are not eligible to be considered for the award of JRF. Candidates who qualify the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and regulations of the concerned Universities/Colleges/State Governments, as the case may be for recruitment of Assistant Professor.
UGC-NET is conducted twice every year (June & December). In order to regularize the UGC-NET examination cycle, the National Testing Agency (NTA), with the concurrence of UGC is conducting UGC NET December 2024 in 83 subjects, at selected cities across the country.
Age Limits for 2025 UGC NET
1. For JRF: Candidates above the age of 30 years cannot apply for the exam
2. There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing for the exam of Assistant Professor
Qualifying Criteria and Pass Percentages of the NET Exam
1. Candidates who wish to appear for the exam should score a minimum of 55 percent (general category) and a minimum of 50 percent (others) in a master’s degree.
2. The examination papers will be divided into 2 and in both of these 2 papers the candidates will face a total of 150 questions and the exam time limit are 3 hours.
3. The minimum cut of the mark after combining both the papers is 40 percent for the general category and for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Transgender categories 35 percent
4. Out of the candidates who have cleared the exam, the top 6 percent are directly selected for the eligibility of NET lectureship
5. From the NET qualifiers, a separate merit list will be created for candidates who are eligible for JRF
6. E-certificates of the qualifying candidates will be available for the candidates in the profile they have created while submitting their online applications at the UGC website.

UGC-NET is conducted twice every year. The forthcoming year's Exams will be scheduled may be on June 2025 and Dec 2025 respectively.
